When severe weather strikes, the effects can be widespread and may be injury or death. With this in mind, a new system will make receiving life-saving emergency weather alerts easier.
The National Weather Service (NWS), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have partnered with America's wireless industry to help build a nationwide text emer
gency alert system. These Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), will come from your local National Weather Service forecast office.
This system is free, and automatic - there is no need so sign up for anything, or download an app. As long as your phone is capable of receiving the WEA message, you'll get wireless alerts for the most dangerous types of weather from NWS, no matter where you are in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
