LEARN ABOUT WIRELESS EMERGENCY ALERTS

When severe weather strikes, the effects can be widespread and may be injury or death. With this in mind, a new system will make receiving life-saving emergency weather alerts easier.

The National Weather Service (NWS), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have partnered with America's wireless industry to help build a nationwide text emer
gency alert system. These Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), will come from your local National Weather Service forecast office.

This system is free, and automatic - there is no need so sign up for anything, or download an app. As long as your phone is capable of receiving the WEA message, you'll get wireless alerts for the most dangerous types of weather from NWS, no matter where you are in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

Wireless Emergency Alerts

The National Weather Service will broadcast warnings for the most dangerous types of severe weather nationwide, such as :

  • Tsunami Warning
  • Tornado Warning
  • Extreme Wind warning
  • Flash Flood Warning
  • Hurricane Warning
  • Typhoon Warning
  • Blizzard Warning
  • Ice Storm Warning
  • Dust Storm Warning

Obviously, not all of these hazards affect LRGV area, but it's good to know that your phone will still receive these alerts, even when you're out of town in a location where these extreme weather conditions might exist.

Do you have more questions on these types of alerts? Do you want to find out if your phone is WEA-Capable? Visit the websites below by clicking the appropriate button below:
